'Discrimination' isn't always a dirty word

Published in the Holland Sentinel on February 18, 2008 -

People have a bad habit of taking things to the extreme. Case in point: We pick words or phrases that we don't like and make them out to be completely bad, or even evil.

Take the word "discrimination." Many in our society would have you believe that any and all discrimination is wrong. I have to disagree. I don't believe that girls should be allowed in the Boy Scouts anymore than I believe boys should be allowed in the Girl Scouts. I don't believe male reporters should be allowed in the women's locker room anymore than women should be allowed in the men's locker room. Non-veterans should not be allowed to join clubs such as the VFW. Yet, to deny such access is technically "discrimination".

I do believe that a store should be allowed to decide which organizations may solicit contributions on its property without the threat of being sued for discrimination. I do believe that the emotionally unstable should not be allowed to be police officers. And I do believe that God discriminates against those who have refused to repent of their sins.

Anyone who says, "All discrimination is wrong and should not be tolerated," is an extremist. Although there are many types of inappropriate discrimination, there are also appropriate types. Extremist thinking and behavior of any sort should be challenged, so that common sense may prevail.

What does it mean to discriminate? According to my dictionary, it means to differentiate, to distinguish by discerning or exposing differences. Is all discrimination bad? I think not. Can discrimination be used in a godly way? I believe so.

I'm not talking about treating people badly because they're different. I am talking about understanding the difference between right and wrong. I am talking about distinguishing between what is acceptable to God and what is not. I am talking about identifying sin and what God says we should do about it.

It is not because of hatred that the Christian calls on others to identify and turn away from their sins. It is because of love for their fellow man and their love of God that they say such things. It is not discrimination against the person, but discrimination against the sin. Anyone who discriminates against sin is acting according to God's word. Anyone who hates others because of their sin is in direct violation of God's greatest commandment.

If those who understand what is right never correct me, how am I to know when I'm doing wrong? There is a huge difference between correction and condemnation. Just because someone points out my sins, that doesn't mean he is judging or condemning me. There is also a huge difference between earthly discrimination and biblical discernment. Directing me away from my sins should not be confused with discrimination.

The good news is that God's love for people and hatred of sin both come from the same heart. God's grace and judgment come from the same heart. We cannot have one without the other. We cannot stand in the comfort of God's mercy without first being convicted of our sins.

There can be no salvation until there is forgiveness; there can be no forgiveness until there is repentance; and there can be no repentance until there is confession. How can there be confession, if we don't know what to confess?

There are many forms of appropriate discrimination taking place every day across this great country. You have to be of minimum age to get a job. You have to be able to see in order to get a driver's license. You have to pass a physical to join the armed forces. You have to pass all your classes in order to graduate from school, etc.

Unfortunately, there are still way too many cases of inappropriate discrimination occurring daily as well. Racial discrimination is still one of this country's worst character flaws. Labeling Christians as hateful because they try to lead people to repentance is also wrong. What we all need to do is learn to discern right from wrong and help each other get on the right path.

The Greatest Miracle of All

The Greatest Miracle of All - Published in the Holland Sentinel on December 17, 2007

As we watch the news and read the papers, we realize there are many misconceptions about Christmas and about miracles.

Christmas is not a season of tolerance. It is a season of love. Christmas is not a season of worry. It is a season for worship. Christmas is not a season of praising friends and family members. It is a season for glorifying God.

Christmas is not a season of decorations and presents under the tree. It is a season for acknowledging the presence of God in our lives. To be honest, Christmas is not even a season of giving. It is actually the season for receiving the greatest gift of all.

Christmas is also a season where we recognize the miracles of God. But which of them is the greatest miracle of all?

Was it the creation of the earth, all the animals and man? Was it the flood and the saving of Noah and his family? Was it the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah? Was it the ten plagues sent against Egypt or the parting of the Red Sea? Was it the dropping of the walls around Jericho? Was it the saving of Daniel in the lion's den? There are so many miracles to choose from in the early years.

How about the miracles surrounding the first coming of the Christ? Was it the visits from the angels to Mary and Joseph? Was it the birth of John the Baptist to the barren woman, Elizabeth?

Was it the immaculate conception bestowed upon the virgin, Mary? Was it the incarnation of God through his son, Jesus Christ? Was it the star the led the wise men to the King of kings? Was it the appearance of the angels who proclaimed the arrival of our savior?

Maybe the greatest miracle was one performed by Christ himself. Jesus healed the sick and cured the lepers. He gave sight to the blind and brought sound to the ears of the deaf. Jesus gave voice to the mute and caused the lame to walk. He turned water into wine and fed thousands with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish. He walked on water and calmed the greatest of storms. Jesus even raised the dead and was raised himself on the third day. Was one of these the greatest miracle of all?

While all of the miracles in the Bible are fantastic and all of the miracles experienced today are wonderful, there is still one that stands taller than the rest. Most people would not even consider listing it as a miracle, yet this reoccurring event is the motive behind the first coming of Christ.

It was a miracle first proclaimed by Jesus before he healed a paralyzed man. It is a miracle that has been repeated millions of times over. The greatest miracle of them all is the forgiveness of sin.

Jesus came to this earth to forgive sins, as only he can do. John 3:16 is quite possibly the most famous verse in all of Scripture. It tells us that God loves us all so much that he sent his one and only Son to give us the gift of eternal life. This gift is available to all who would believe in the Christ.

But what does it mean to believe in Jesus? One need look no farther than the first words preached by Jesus Christ, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."

When we repent, he forgives. Once we are forgiven, we receive the greatest of all gifts, eternal life. What greater miracle could there be than that?

Therefore, as we reflect on the reason for the season, let us not forget the reason for the reason. Jesus is the reason for the season and forgiveness is reason Jesus came to be with us.

Straight or Gay, Sin is Sin

Straight or Gay, Sin is Sin - Published in the Holland Sentinel on November 12, 2007

I am a Christian. What should I say then about sin? How should I deal with my own sins? How should I treat others regarding their sins?

The Bible says it is a sin to seek revenge against others. However, I cannot allow someone who has wronged me to go unpunished. What lies should I say to myself? "It is justice that I seek, not vengeance. If God didn't want me to get even with my enemies, then he would not have made me so judgmental." If I love God I will not.

The Bible says it is a sin to steal. My brother commits grand larceny. What lies should I say to him? "Many people have an innate desire to take that which does not belong to them. God made you a thief and he loves you just as you are. You have done no wrong and you have no need to change your ways." If I love him I will not.

The Bible says it is a sin to lie. My sister lies all the time. What lies should I say to her? "Everybody tells lies. We cannot help being the way we are. God has no problem with your lack of integrity. He loves it when people deceive others." If I love her I will not.

The Bible says it is a sin to commit adultery. My mother confesses to me that she has engaged in numerous affairs. What lies should I say to her? "It is OK, Mom, for you to have affairs, because God put those desires in your heart. You have no reason to feel regret, remorse or shame. God understands your lustful appetite and will bless you for being open about it." If I love her I will not.

The Bible says it is a sin for a man to lie with another man as he would a woman. My son tells me that he is gay and that he wants me to accept him for who he is. What lies should I say to him? "Son, that is great! God created each of us in His image and if you are gay that means God is gay. Your sexual tendencies are part of who God made you to be. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing. God accepts you just as you are." If I love him I will not.

I am a Christian. I understand the truth that I, like all people, am a born sinner. I have accepted the fact that I was born into a sinful world with sinful tendencies in my heart. I also realize that God despises my sin and will not accept me into his kingdom unless I am cleansed of my sins.

I am a Christian. I know that by my own power, I cannot overcome my sins. I believe that Jesus willingly sacrificed himself on the cross so that I can be rescued from the eternal consequences of my sins. I have accepted God's revelation that without faith in Christ, I am still subject to God's righteous judgment.

I am a Christian. I have heard the call of God to repent of my sins. I have sought out the Lord Jesus Christ and confessed my sins to Him. I have asked Jesus to have mercy on me in spite of my sinful nature and to forgive me of my sins. By His mighty power and loving grace, He has granted my request.

I am a Christian. I have received forgiveness for my sins from the only one who can forgive sins. I have heard His call to repent and will dedicate the rest of my life to the process of repentance. I will reject my sinful nature and my sinful desires and I will trust in God to help me be pure, as He is pure.

I am a Christian. Although my sins have been forgiven and my salvation is secure, I know that I will occasionally stumble and even fall. In spite of my sinful shortcomings and in spite of the world's ridicule of me, I will do my part to lead others to repentance, so that they too may one day rejoice in heaven.

I am a Christian. What shall I say then to my brother, my sister, my mother and my son? Shall I tell them that I want each of them to be saved as I am saved? Shall I share the truth about sin with them? Shall I try my hardest to convince them to seek Jesus' forgiveness for their sins? If I love them I will.

No one's perfect, so we have to choose the best

Published in the Holland Sentinel on October 15, 2007 -

James Dobson is a courageous leader and a battle-scarred warrior. He has gone head to head with the best of them and has done a wonderful job of defending Christian values in the political arena. He has earned our respect and deserves our prayers.

However, just as John Kerry's war record didn't make him a good president, Jim Dobson's record does not make him right about the 2008 presidential race.

Dobson has allowed his pride to cause him to publicly vow "never for the rest of my life to vote for anyone who would kill innocent babies." Making this a personal vow is not the problem. The problem is that he has tied his position to the front-runners for the 2008 presidential election and is publicly encouraging millions to follow his lead. If that happens, Hillary Clinton will most certainly be the next president.

According to most major polls, if the general election were held today, Rudy Giuliani would face Hillary Clinton for president. If this scenario becomes a reality, pro-lifers will be forced to choose which pro-choice candidate would be the best of the two to defend the sanctity of life. According to the Dobson plan, pro-lifers should not vote for either candidate.

Promoting our values can never be accomplished by refusing to vote. A non-vote for Rudy would be the same as casting two votes for Hillary.

American citizens not only have the right to vote, but the responsibility to vote. We have a duty to ourselves, our children and our country to make sure that the best candidates are elected. We never have the luxury of having "ideal candidates," who meet 100 percent of our expectations. In every election, we must choose the best person for the job, from the field of available candidates.

There are also times where we may have to set aside our pride in order to make sure the wrong person does not get elected. The 2008 election could present such an opportunity for the pro-life citizens of this country.

If Dobson wants to take a biblical approach to this situation, he should go back and study the books of Daniel and Esther in the Old Testament.

Daniel was taken captive to Babylon and forced into slavery as an assistant to some very evil kings. He did not refuse to work for them because their pagan practices clashed with his religion. Instead, Daniel held true to his faith and honored God as he worked directly with and for the evil kings.

Esther was chosen to be the queen of a pagan king. She could have gone out of her way to avoid selection, but instead, she gave her best for the sake of her Lord. In doing so, God used her to save his people from complete annihilation by having her convince the pagan king to change his position.

Neither of these Old Testament heroes wanted the task appointed them. Surely they would have preferred to remain with other godly people. However, when the time came, they did what they had to do for the sake of God's plan.

If God gives us a choice between candidates A and B, we do not have the option of choosing D, none of the above.

I would never vote for Rudy, or any other pro-choice candidate, in a primary election. However, once the lots have been cast and I am forced to choose between bad or worse, I will prayerfully make the godly choice.

Dobson's Option C is the promotion of a conservative third-party candidate. Unfortunately, there is not enough time to establish a viable third-party candidate for the 2008 election. First, we need to keep Hillary from becoming president. Then Dobson and company can focus on building a third party.

The solution to the Dobson problem is simple. Americans need to make sure that we don't have two pro-choice candidates on the presidential ballot next November. That battle can only be won in the primaries.

Abortion is not an 'Option'

Published in the Holland Sentinel on July 16, 2007

Back in January, I introduced you to my niece while she was still in her mommy's tummy. If you caught the Jan. 15 Sentinel article, "Right to choose is wrong," you saw an ultrasound photo of what appeared to be a smiling baby in the womb.

Well, I am most pleased to provide you with an updated photo of the latest addition to the Helvig clan. Cassidy07

Cassidy is now about a month and a half old and is doing great. Her sister graduated from high school just days before she was born, and her brother will be a freshman this fall. This means my sister and her husband are starting the parent track all over again, just as it seemed they were ready to move toward the empty nest stage of life.

It would have been so easy to say "oops" and go to the doctor for a quick fix. After all, they had paid their parental dues and now should have been a time for them to enjoy each other more.

And what about the money? It would have been much cheaper to get an abortion than it will be to raise this child. These arguments are sadly commonplace in our society.

I praise God that my sister does not think the way too many Americans think. I am so pleased that abortion was not an option when she received word that she was pregnant. I am also very happy to have this opportunity to introduce you to my niece.

Cassidy has already brought great joy into the hearts of many people. She is a blessing to her parents, her siblings and all who have had the opportunity to hold her. She is a beautiful baby who is just beginning to experience what is sure to be a wonderful life.

Cassidy is also the same human being she was back in January, when she was but a few months along in the womb.

As I stated back in January: "Although the topic of abortion is highly debated in religious and political circles, I submit this article in the interest of human decency. The value of the life of a child should not be used as political fodder, nor should it be used to divide a society. Abortion should simply be outlawed because it is wrong to take the life of an innocent human being."

Considering this picture and the ultrasound photo from January, how could anyone say that it would have been OK to kill my niece before she was born? What in the world is going on in the hearts and minds of the pro-choice crowd?

Illegal Sanctuaries

Published as 'Chruches step over the line' in the Holland Sentinel on May 21, 2007

The illegal alien situation in America just keeps getting worse by the day.

On May 1st of 2007, the Los Angeles sect of the nationwide march of illegals against America got ugly and the police had to step in to restore order. Once again, the authorities have been labeled as the bad guys and the criminals have been elevated to the status of victims. Since they received such sympathetic media coverage, these instigators are now planning another nationwide protest against America. If they want to protest, they should go home and march on their own soil.

Next, we learned that a terrorist cell, including three illegal aliens, was plotting to attack the U.S. Army base at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Their reconnaissance was complete and their plans were ready to be executed. All that remained was procuring the automatic weapons needed to carry out their murderous assault. Fortunately for the men, women and children on the base, the FBI prevented this jihad from taking place on American soil. So much for “The Bush administration is trying to scare Americans with false threats.”

Then we saw reports of foreign children, many of which are illegals, crossing the border into El Paso to attend American schools. Did you know that in Texas alone, the cost of educating illegal students is over $1 billion per year? When we add the cost of things like health care and law enforcement, we discover that illegal aliens are costing the American taxpayers over $3.7 billion per year just in Texas. It sounds like its time for a revolutionary-style tea party in the Rio Grande.

If all of this were not enough, Churches across America are now impeding federal authorities by offering sanctuary to illegal aliens. The United States has no protection clause granting churches the right to shield illegal aliens from the law. Thus, these church leaders are deliberately breaking the law in an attempt to force the government’s hand to change the national policy regarding illegal immigration.

These activist churches have clearly crossed the line that separates church from state. They have willingly stepped out of their religious-protected status and into the realm of the political lobby. They have chosen the path of anarchy and must be dealt with swiftly and accordingly.

The first thing the federal government must do is revoke the tax exempt status of these sanctuary churches. Next, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) needs to raid each of these church properties and apprehend every illegal alien present. Once background checks are completed on each of these international trespassers, they need to either be deported or jailed awaiting trial, if suspected of committing a serious crime. Finally, the feds need to arrest every member of the church involved with harboring these fugitives and charge them with obstruction of justice and any other associated crimes.

When did America give up its right to national sovereignty? Why do we allow illegal aliens to protest our government on our soil? When are we going to require proof of legal residency for all students? How long are we going to allow these sanctuary churches to thumb their noses at the U.S. Constitution and violate federal law?

Once again, I implore you to take a stand. Contact your elected officials and demand the full enforcement of our immigration laws. Send your e-mails and make your phone calls. Let the bureaucrats know that if they don’t do their job and solve this problem immediately, you will replace them with citizens who will truly be a government of the people, by the people and for the people of America.

Right to choose is Wrong

Published in the Holland Sentinel on January 15, 2007

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my niece. She does not yet have a name, but as you can see, she is a happy baby. This picture was taken at the end of her first trimester. Isn't she a beautiful sight?

When I first saw this picture, my eyes welled up with tears and my heart was filled with joy. What a wonderful gift God has given to my sister and her husband. This precious child, less than 3 months old, already has full facial features and managed to smile for the camera from inside of her mommy's womb. She will probably grow up to be a big ham, just like her older sister.

As I gazed upon this incredible sight, my mind soon began to wander. I recalled recent debates over so-called "late term" abortions and visualized angry women holding up their "abortion rights" signs. I could not imagine any civil human being looking at this picture, knowing that a child like my niece was growing inside of them and consciously choosing to end her precious life.

How did this country come to the point we are at regarding the moral and legal issue of abortion? At what point did we look at this smiling face and decide, "This is not yet a person"? How did we allow women to believe that they have the right to exterminate the child growing within them? How did we convince ourselves that there is enough of a difference between the first trimester and the third trimester to justify killing a child like my niece? What kind of society are we?

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, I believe that this picture to be worth a few choice words. Those words should be well-written and placed in the law books of our state and every other state in this country. Those words should bring an end to the cruel, outrageous, and monstrous practice we call "legalized abortion."

Just because something is legal, that does not make it right. Just because you can do something, that doesn't make it OK. Just because one half of the country thinks that a woman should be allowed to murder her unborn child doesn't mean we should allow it to happen. To kill a baby like my niece is absolutely unconscionable and should not be tolerated in any society, especially one which prides itself on human rights.

Although the topic of abortion is highly debated in religious and political circles, I submit this article in the interest of human decency. The value of the life of a child should not be used as political fodder, nor should it be used to divide a society. Abortion should simply be outlawed because it is wrong to take the life of an innocent human being. Looking at this picture of my niece, how could anyone say that she is not yet a human being?

I would ask you to cut out this picture and keep it with you at all times. Next time the topic of abortion comes up, please introduce my niece to whom you are speaking. Let them know that she was in her first trimester, not her third, when this picture was taken. Explain that she has just as much a right to live as her mother. Help them understand abortion is murderous and that the laws of this country need to be changed to reflect true civility.

Christians Will Win Cold War

Published in the Holland Sentinel on December 18, 2006.

When you hear the term, "Cold War," you probably think about the 46-year conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. You remember people like Truman and Reagan, Stalin and Gorbachev. You remember events like the Cuban missile crisis, the Vietnam war, the Soviet war in Afghanistan and the downing of the Berlin Wall. You remember the fear, the tension, and the threat of a seemingly imminent all-out nuclear war. You remember people building bomb shelters, participating in civil defense drills and clinging to their televisions and radios, as they waited for President Kennedy to save them from complete annihilation.

The Cold War was a long and dreadful event in America's history. It cost each side trillions of dollars and many lives. It brought about a number of nuclear nations and resulted in missile silos being placed all over the planet. For decades, the Cold War dominated global politics and economics, and had a significant impact on the ideological and cultural growth of our world.

Just what is a cold war? One definition says that "a cold war is a state of rivalry and tension between two factions, groups or individuals that stops short of open, violent confrontation." The war in Iraq is not a cold war. It is however a religious war; a holy war; a jihad. Islamic extremists are fighting Christians in an attempt to stamp out Christianity so that they can exterminate the nation of Israel. These extremists have their evil hearts set on global domination and they have engaged in violent confrontation to achieve that goal.

American Christians need to pray for victory in the Middle East, for the safety of Israel and for an end to Islam's quest for global domination. These Christians also need to wake up to the reality that they are in the middle of a cold war right here in America. The two factions include the Christians on the right and the anti-Christs on the left. The anti-Christs are not fighting battles with guns and bombs. They are fighting a cold war against Christians with words and ideals.

The anti-Christs are winning because the average American Christian does not yet know they are in the middle of a losing battle. They do not believe they have been or are being persecuted. They do not recognize the attacks of the enemy, because there is no physical suffering associated with this cold war. However, if they take a step back, read the scriptures and take to heart God's warnings, they will come to realize the significance of what is happening to God's Church right here in the land which promises freedom of religion.

This cold war has many fronts. There are battles taking place in our schools, in the media and inside our government. Attacks are being launched against our children through TV, movies and video games. Attacks are being launched against our young adults in our colleges, on the Internet and at events such as spring break. Attacks are being launched against our poor and our seniors who are being led to put their faith in government instead of in God.

The anti-Christs are tearing away at the very fabric of family. They have effectively convinced many Christians that sin is not sin. They have twisted God's loving grace into a license for immorality. They promote sexual freedom and excuse sexual misconduct. They have diluted the Christian's belief in the need for repentance. The anti-Christs preach their lies to America and have methodically turned the tide of public opinion against Christians.

You know who their generals are because you see them on TV and hear them on the radio. They can't do their shows without attacking God's children and they can't make a movie without taking the Lord's name in vane. They desire a secular nation and they want God out of everything. Their generals are convincing because their commander-in-chief is a crafty serpent. His name is Satan and he has the upper hand.

What shall we do? Shall we continue to ignore the reality of our situation? Shall we run and hide? Shall we cower in fear? Shall we give in to the ways of wickedness? No! Christians are called to take a stand and to don the armor of God. We are to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Christians are to be alert and to pray in the spirit, while fearlessly making known the mystery of the Gospel. We shall win the battles and win this cold war. That is what we shall do.

Separation of School and State

Published November 20, 2006 in the Holland Sentinel as "Separate school and state"

It is time for a new direction in the way our government handles our public schools. It is time for the government to relinquish constitutional control of our public schools. It is time for a separation of school and state.

How insane is it that all American children cannot participate in a Bible club at school if they so desire? How wrong is it that Christian children are being persecuted by faculty and staff if they want to pray in school? How unacceptable is it that our valedictorians are not allowed to thank or praise the Lord their God as part of their commencement speech?

If a local school board wants to allow their schools to have Bible clubs on campus, they should be allowed to do so without governmental persecution. Criteria would need to be established and upheld to ensure the club's activities are in keeping with the school's guidelines. Such clubs would be voluntary, require faculty sponsorship and hopefully parental involvement, just like the chess club, the Spanish club or the debate club.

What about other religions? If the local school board wants to allow religious clubs on its campuses, they should also be allowed to do so. Consider Dearborn, where there is a huge Muslim student body. If there is a demand for a Koran club and there is faculty support of such a program, students should be allowed to have a religious club.

If a student wants to pray silently at his desk prior to the commencement of class or taking an exam, he should feel free to do so without being chastised by the teacher. If a student wants to pray over her lunch tray in the cafeteria, she should be able to do so without any pressure from faculty or staff. If a team of students want to pray before a big game, they should be allowed to do so. And if the coach is invited and wants to participate in the prayer, she should be encouraged to do so.

All across this "great" nation, our brightest and our best students are acknowledged at commencement ceremonies by giving their valedictorian speech. In too many cases, these most honorable students are being told that they will face stiff penalties if they mention God in their speech. Can someone please tell me when and how these students became part of school staff, subjecting them to this ludicrous misrepresentation of the separation of church and state, as it relates to public schools?

The valedictorian is simply a student of the school. He or she does not represent the faculty, the staff, the school itself, or the country. These students should be encouraged to say whatever is in their hearts and on their minds at their commencement ceremony. The government has no business and no right to interfere with a speech from one student to other students. How can we be such a "great" nation, when we stifle the "free speech" of our future leaders?

The government needs to get out of the business of running schools and let local school boards manage their academic programs according to the culture of their respective communities. The schools are not government bodies and the faculty members are not government officials. Just because their salaries are paid by our taxes, that does not justify holding them to the same standards as our elected officials.

What is the difference between a school principal and the foreman of an engineering company hired by the government to lay 100 miles of highway? Is the contractor prohibited from expressing his faith in the workplace, as the principal is? What is the difference between a Navy chaplain and a high school guidance counselor? Why is one allowed to express his faith, while the other is prohibited from even mentioning matters of faith on the job?

The concept of the "separation of church and state" has gone too far and it is time for a common sense correction. It is time to allow God back into the schools where the majority of the people who send their kids to those schools want Him there. It is time for a separation of school and state.
